Performing Live… Where’s the “How To” Guide?
Hey! Thanks for stopping by!
I recently got the privilege to have my first real 3 hour long gig at The Taproom in Knightdale! Woohoo! It was such a blast. What all of those people didn’t know was that I had spent the last two weeks riddled with anxiety over it being absolutely perfect.
That is something no one really prepares you for. I looked up videos on “how to be captivating” or “how to have stage banter” as if I hadn’t been performing on stage for the past 10 years. All of those videos had one thing in common… they all said “you just have to figure it out when you’re up there”. WHAT? What do you mean figure it out? I wanted to be prepared for everything. What could go wrong? What if people left because of me? What if I messed up every song?
Guess what… things did go wrong, I did mess up, but people didn’t leave. It was such a human experience. I realized that when I watch a musician or performer mess up or stumble over their words, there is no judgement only admiration for their courage to even step up on stage. Once I got that in my head, I started to have fun. And once I started to have fun, everyone else did too! It was such a magical feeling. Sharing art is one of the most human things one can do, I think. Now, I’m living for the next time I get to do exactly what I was afraid of doing a week ago. This is what I was put here on Earth to do. And I say that in the most not-cheesy way possible.
Hope you can come be a part of this wonderful experience with me someday!
